Actually,, that's "moot point".

And it's far from moot. Confusing a program (a telnet *client* in this
case) named telnet with the telnet protocol it uses is actually
moderately serious. 

That sort of confiusion makes folks ee incompatabilities where there
aren't any. And think that bugs in a bug (failures to adhere to a
protocol) aren't problems because the program works with other copies
of itself, even though it on't work correctly with programs that
implement the protocol correctly. 

MS takes shameless advantage of that last with both IE & OE.
