True, although as you say, it's handy for probing the port and irq.

These days, it's easy. I go back far enough to have worked with some of
the first 8051s. Getting these to work at 38K could be a challenge. :-)

So true.

I see a section titled "Automatic Crystal Frequency." in TECHTALK.TXT.
This seems to be related to what we are discussing.

One thing that SIO2K can do that I don't recall seeing mentioned in the
message thread is SIO2K provides a debugging tool named logger.exe. It
collects more detail than what one can gather with the logfile= commonad
line parameter. It may even record sufficient detail to show the
parameters that the frequency adjustment logic is attempting to use.

True and this is easy enough to check on startup. The biggest problem
I've had using PCI COM cards on older software is the IRQs. A lot of the
older code allows the port and IRQ to be overridden, but limits the IRQ to
between 0 and 8.

This I know. The code I posted is running on these kinds of boxes. A 486
is plenty fast for the application, so the boxes don't get upgraded until
they break. I think all the PS/2 Model 30s are gone, but I haven't
spokent to this customer in a while.

Sorry. :-)

You have to register, but registration is free.

The UART code is in inout.zip. It's mostly assembler, but that's to be
expected given its vintage. The code we care about at the moment is
SetBaud in atsub.asm. Unless I missed it there's no code to adjust the
clock scaler but it would be easy enough to add.

Be aware that this code may or may not be the same as was IBM is currently
distributing as COM.SYS. IBM can be slow to update the site. Also, code
that a vendor might consider proprietary is not supposed to get to the
site.

Regards,

Steven
