I think it may be hard for some to visualize the situation, Jim.
In this particular case the subway 'car' fit the tunnel 'snugly'. 
I saw the pictures of the real thing on a PBS special about subways, and
this thing was AMAZING!
It only had two 'stations' one at each end, and didn't go far as it was
merely a proof of concept structure, but it DID work, and WELL!
The world just wasn't ready for it.  The fact that it SURVIVED all these
years in a very well preserved manor was even MORE amazing.
