Its hard to give a remote diagnostic, so I try to give you a complete
check list in hope that only one or two point(s) the one(s) you're
missing.
To be checked:
SCSI Controller BIOS:
- each controller counts for its own.
(e.g.: both can have ID 0 occupyed)
the controller with HDs attached should be the first dedekted
if both controllers have HDs attached the one with the
boot device should be the first. Exchange the PCI slots to get it.
HD should start with ID 0, 1 and so on
other devises should NOT on ID 0 or 1
- Terminators on controller:
BIOS setting: AUTO
on each connector without cable connected: ON
- for each ID in usage:
maximum speed: highest possible for each U2/U2W device
negotiation: auto/max for disks
auto/20 for SCSI II devices
auto/40 for U2W devices
cables:
- never connect SCSI II or UW devices onto 160/U2W wire!
Even as there adapters to do so - you'll get significant
performance loss because the slowest device on the cable
reduces all devices to that speed
- never connect U2W on 160 wire, except you have no other choice
- never connect U3 (160) on UW or SCSI2
- SCSI II and UW does not allow cables longer than 1.5m
Distance between connectors is 400mm or more.
Each mm counts to not have more that 1.5m AND less than 400mm
between connectors. It is possible to remove the connectors from
the cables and place them again to get the last connector
placed some cm or mm to get the cable a bit shortened without
loosing connectivity. All you needs for is instinktive feel
to open the connector and close it on its new place.
Depending on the controller the total amount of all cables on
it can be 1.5m independant of the type.
Devices:
- each device needs its own ID. Recommended: boot device ID0
duplicate IDs gives undefined behavior
controller should own ID #7
- each SCSI II and UW cable nedds to be terminated at its end
- U3W (160) cable needs an active terminator on its end
no device is able to terminate the cable!
- U2W - like U3W
- UW - only the last device on the cable must be terminated
The last device must be on the last connector
- SCSI II - same as UW
- when there are more than one device on a cable you should
activate TERM Power (not TERM!) on the last device
having it activated on multiple devices is not a mistake.
Be sure not to get confused with TERM Power and TERM!
config.sys:
1. unicode.sys must be on top on config.sys
else you may loose access to files/directories named
with other chars than a-zA-Z0-9.
eCS 1.1 and newer does this in default during base install
2. *.ifs have to follow unicode.sys shortenly
eCS 1.1 does this in default during base install
3. aic*.add needs no parameters
there are exceptions but for that read the documentation
coming with this driver
4. aicu160.add has to be in front of the aic7870.add
That means be sure that the controller with the
boot device attached is the first driver
5. even as the 160 specification allows LONG cables, SCSI II
and UW need very short cables (less than 1.5m)
Each mm counts when your system gets instable or won't boot.
Check all the cables of broken lines! If one is broken or not
isolated right you gets massive problems
Check each connector of beeing 100% fine. One single crooked pin
destroys the functionality of the whole bus or at least of the
device complete or partly.
Boot from CD only using the preboot menue. Check the order of the
adaptec drivers there. Be sure the aicu160 is on place no. 1 and the
other (when you needs it because the CD is attached to!) is on place
no. 2.
You can reorder the default by changing the PCI slots the controllers
are attached to.
