I have to agree... of course, any time you allow the rules to be bent a bit,
it'll be abused. When we flew to Mexico, we checked the hardshell suitcase
and each carried on one duffle bag plus her purse. Both flights, there and
back, were about 50% capacity, yet there was practically no room available in
the overheads. Of course, Alaskan had a buttload of pillows and blankets in
EVERY bin.

If he wasn't wearing the coat, then it was a carry-on (unless he found the
airline that has cut back to one).
