I don't know about 24  hours but I'll be doing it every 3 - 7 days from
now on!!!
I'd just run scandisk before shutdown and it reported no problems :-(
System had been up at least two weeks when it trashed everything but
Knoppix and even there I needed the Linux boot diskette and
rewrote LiLo to boot it from the hard drive.

I think ZoneAlarm you turned me onto may take care of most of those
security holes but I'm not certain..

It's been fine for days now.
Power saver is set to low power the system at 20 minutes,
same for monitor but leaves the hard drive spinning at all times.

 Not on the drive entering as root it's not.
 Remember I mounted /hda1 to take a look at it
 and I also reran LiLo, neither are currently allowed as an ordinary
 user.
 Or do you mean if the image file isn't loaded
 it's invulnerable? That would make sense.
 Really annoying that /hda1 looked fine checking it out
 from Linux but when I used the EBD everything went to hell
 in a heartbeat.

Could be, you've been right an awfully lot but why
was Linux on /hda3 and /hda4 unaffected?
Also the system never actually seems to get very hot
anywhere when I've had the case open poking around.

Well, it's yet once again cleaned up my drive and I'm even yet more
organized than before.
What kills me is before the security patch Microsoft delayed
for 6 months so they'd get it right, that was their claim, that's
when the system crashed.
No other critical update had given a problem and I'd been operating
for months without problem.

Yeah the others even feel lousy by comparison.
Got one spare IBM I need to take apart and clean to see if
I can unstick some keys, especially the spacebar.
