Newer, high performance HD, unlike your smaller IDE drives. How "well
under 32G" are they? How old?

Is #2 SCSI?
 
Just because someone made and sold you a drive switching device doesn't
mean it is legal under ATA specifications. The maximum ATA cable length
has always (AFAIK) 18". Once upon a time, performance wasn't high enough
for excessive cable length to be a problem, so there are plenty illegal
length cables around. You'll find that the ATA66 and higher specs
require 80 pin cables. In fact, many drives and systems limited to ATA33
are marginal or worse with legal length 40 pin cables, and will perform
to their maximum only with an 80 pin cable.

So, find an 80 pin cable, connect it directly between HD and
motherboard, and you prolly find the performance penalty disappears,
even when using default driver settings. If that is the case, time to
complain to Trios.
