AMD panel discussion on 64 bit computing and reception after.

32/64
Question to AMD during panel discussion: How long will you continue
making 32 bit processors?
First part of answer: As long as people keep buying them.
Second part of answer: AMD intends to very quickly eliminate the price
differential between 32 and 64 hence eliminating price as a reason for
anyone to buy 32 bit. 64 chip is back compatible to 32 and X86. It is
in full production.

Could be a good time to buy 32 bit. At Fry's, their sale-of-the day for
at a long time has been; buy a processor, they will give you a MB.

Heat
I had heard stories about AMD processors running hot. There are even
suppliers who sell heat sinks that they present as "able to cool even
AMD". At the reception, I cornered three AMD people, together. I
referred to the overheat stories I had heard. They had heard them as well.

I then asked about heat damage from as many different ways as I could
think of. This took maybe fifteen minutes. They left me convinced that
they believed that - at least with late model MB and processors - AMD
chips do not run hotter than Intel's, and that they will not, and
probably cannot be damaged by heat. I tried to do worst case hardware
failure, but it always ended with the processor surviving.
