david, at 10:01 on May 26 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley...

BG> Damn and fuck! It's on his board somewhere, but no problem, I've
BG> UUencoded it, and will send it to you as netmail instead.

db> Yeah, Paul finally sent it.

Does it work OK for you? If I have my DPMI server loaded, it tells me to
disable it first, and if I run it from Win95 DOS session, it only
recognises the first HPFS partition. I found it works best from a raw DOS
boot, no startup files at all.

db>> Let me guess, Paul - you don't have the technology, right? ;-)
BG> I think he wants TIC files, but surely not for simple file-attaches?

db> Seems so...

Oh well, no more file-attaches from me then. Looks like UUencoded netmail
might be the go instead...

db>> Seen the new interface to appear with Merlin (OS/2 Warp Version 4)?

BG> Nope. You forget that MY OS/2 ain't broke...

db> It isn't always *just* an issue of being "broke" - some
new features are
db> worth a product upgrade (same goes for modem Flash ROM upgrades...). For
db> example, there's rumours of built-in TrueType font support (in OS/2 itself,
db> as opposed to just WinOS/2), OpenDoc, colour-coded reorganised notebooks,

A few new features then, but still mainly cosmetic. Unless app suport for
OS/2 improves dramatically, I'll be seriously considering NT 4.0 as my next
OS (just as long as it handles comms as well as OS/2 does now).

db> redesigned window buttons/frames, DIVE, DAX, etc.

If it's the DAX from DS9, I'll buy it tomorrow!

db>> And joy of joys, DEATH TO THE UGLY SYSTEM FONT!! :-)

BG> In a CLI, you mean? Funny, I don't mind the font at all here.

db> GUI "System" font (ATM-controlled), not CLI.

Dunno, I prefer Arial TT, and as OS/2's Helvetica ATM is much the same,
it's not really an issue as far as I'm concerned.

BG> I hope so, although my WFW 2.0c still works great under WinOS2 anyway.

db> WFW 2.0c is good for quick and dirty documents, but my main two gripes with
db> it are:

db> 1. It's a pain for long organised documents (>100 pages); and,

Might be resource-dependant though. Mine runs a treat with 32Mb.

db> 2. It's a Windows application - I've long since gone
"PROTECTONLY=YES".

What, no DOS apps or utes either? What a brave fellow you are. :)

db>> I ain't giving my 32Mb to WinNT that easily!!

BG> Why not?

db> Simple - any functionality gain is offset by the lacking available memory
db> which leads to decreased performance and a need for me to upgrade memory
db> again.

What could possibly consume your entire 32Mb though?

BG> All you'll need is a 64Mb swapfile as well, and away you go... :)

db> Like hell! I can run Linux at the moment with X11 (windowing/GUI) running
db> and still have 16Mb *RAM* free, not using a single byte of swap space!!

Dunno, I have 8 processes running right now, yet memsize still shows just
over 17Mb free (and that's with no swapfile either).

db>> I'd rather run Quake or Linux, quite frankly. ;-)

BG> Will either of those run OS/2 or Windows apps though?

db> Linux should be able to run Windows apps in time (WINE and other efforts
db> currently in development), and no doubt someone will write a plug-in for
db> Quake too (they've developed about everything else so far..).

Have they managed to clone Unix's X-windows yet? Add to that the ability
to run DOS and Winapps (whether you like it or not [and I personally don't]
it seems we're stuck with Winapps for quite a while yet), and it could
become a fairly useful alternative for non-mainstream users.

Regards, Bill
