Some of the files for outlook express (including news groups) can get quite
large and if OE crashes once it can corrupt one of them. Once it's corrupt,
all kinds of strange things can happen.

I'd run chkdsk first to make sure there are no disk issues then run
maintenance/compress of all your OE folders.
