It might affect them if the water condition was change suddenly ie 
taken from atank with soft water then put in a tank with hard water..

I've got two plecos and they take all kinds of punishiment from my 
other fish and it has no affect on them whatsoever but water condition 
is apossabilty take a sample of water to your Aquarist store and the 
will do a test and tell you if there is anything wrong with the water.
