-> KB> If I buy 2000 copies of Windows 95, do I have a legal right to
-> sell it KB> to other people? Not according to the packaging and NOT
-> according to KB> copyright laws.
->
-> Wrong. Just plain vanilla wrong. Incorrect. You need to check
-> your facts Kit, because saying stuff like this shows you obviously
-> don't know what on Earth you are talking about. It's like saying
-> the sky is green, it makes you look silly. I don't mean it as a
-> flame, i am trying to help you not look foolish.
->
Read the box. Read the user liscence. You do not have any right to sell
Microsoft products. You don't own them! You own a liscence to use them,
but the program itself is still owned by the folks at Microsoft. Read
the box. Read the agreement.
->
-> KB> Video tapes and computer programs are sold for in-home (or
-> in-office) KB> personal use. The copyright owner retains the rights
-> to the program or KB> movie. You have no right to sell it to someone
-> else without permission.
-> Wrong. Gawd. Totally wrong! You couldn't be more wrong if you
-> were on Jupiter. If I buy a copy of Lotus and want to sell it to my
-> friend, I am totally, 100% entitled to do that. PERIOD. To think
-> or say anything else is just not correct. I don't know how much
-> more plain I can be!
Well, they plainly state they are sold for personal, in-home use and
that the copyright owner retains the program, so I am taking their word
for it over yours. They are in the business legally and they should
know.
-> KB> Try buying 200 copies of a video tape and then selling them on
-> the KB> streets.
->
-> I don't have the funds to buy 200 copies of a tape, but if I wanted
-> to, I could. It is COMPLETELY LEGAL.
->
At this point I think you KNOW that you would go to jail if you were out
on the street selling copies of "the Little Mermaid" video tapes,
especially at the amounts you charge. I think this has now gotten to the
point where you just want to mix it up with me because I pointed out
that selling another person's copyrighted property is illegal.
->
-> That is true....IF...I purchased ONE copy, and illegally made the
-> other 200 copies. Yup, then I'd be keeping Bubba company. But if I
-> bought 200 original copies, and sold those same 200 copies, well,
-> that is PERFECTLY LEGAL, and any cop who tried to stop me would find
-> themselves charged with harassment and interfering with my legal
-> rights do conduct business.
You keep saying you have a "right" to sell Disney video tapes, but
that's not true! You have to be a legitimate, liscenced video outlet to
have that right. You aren't. You see, the right has to come from Disney.
They own all the rights to these movies. You don't. They decide to
release a movie. They go to their distribution people and have them
distribute it. Nobody else has a right to distribute it. Later, they
decide to release it on video. They go to their distribution people and
have them distribute it to legitimate video outlets. They distribute the
video because they have the rights - as handed down by Disney who OWN
the copyright on the thing. Nobody else has the right to distribute it.
