No it can not be upgraded to a 28.8 v.34, but it can be traded in for a 28.8 
v.34.
I believe that the current trade up program for the "U1496E" is you send your 
old "E" modem and $299.00US and Zyxel will send you a new "Elite" 28.8 v.34 
modem.
Additional options with this modem are on 4 to 8 megs of onboard ram for 
direct fax recieve, built in ISDN, and as well as all the usual Zyxel 
features that you have become used to.
