Everybody knows (or should) that viruses don't care at all what OS is
being used - all general purpose computers are at risk.

It's a Data Execution Protection (DEP) scheme. More about stopping a
particular kind of exploit than it is about stopping viruses.

That's a good idea. There is some malware which escapes from the hosted
OS, but most just detect the environment and opt not to trigger the
payload in a VM.
