Ah, garbage hives is a toughie.  For next time, I dimly remember two paths:

o At jsiinc.com, there's a tip on what to delete and replace to do a
totally manual registry rollback.  This presumes your backup hives would at
least boot the machine, and you'd need to install the drive as slave in
another machine.

o Bart's PE CD may have a tool for this.
