Plane crash lands in Manitoba, leaving four dead
     LITTLE GRAND RAPIDS, Manitoba - December 10, 1997 00:29 a.m. EST
 - An airplane slammed into dense bush in northeastern Manitoba on
Tuesday just short of a landing strip, killing four people and in-
juring 13, police said. The plane crashed about 3:30 p.m. while
trying to land in cold, misty weather.
Three of the dead were killed in the crash while the fourth, a
young boy about five years old, died hours later in a Winnipeg
hospital, where the injured were airlifted.
The EMB 110 aircraft, owned by Sowind Airline Ltd. of St.
Andrews, Manitoba, was carrying two pilots and 15 passengers on
a flight from St. Andrews to Little Grand Rapids.
Capt. Marc Favre of the military search and rescue center in
Trenton, Ontario, said the plane crashed in trees and rocks about
100 yards short of the landing strip.
The armed forces sent two Hercules aircraft and a helicopter to
the area, about 180 miles northeast of Winnipeg, near the Ontario
 boundary.
"We have icy, misty, foggy weather," said Stemken. "It's not a
 good flying day at all."
Oliver Owen of Sowind Air said another flight landed at the air-
strip with no problems half an hour earlier.
     The plane was a 1982 twin-engine turbo-prop that carried 19
people. Owen said he was not aware of any problems with the
 aircraft.
