Well, no. But verifying your assumptions should be done before we
test the model.

This would be best. But I realize this isn't always possible. This
being the case, the author of such model should try to be explicit as
possible as to why he or she thinks the assumption is both necessary
and reasonable.

Well, since you bring it up. Why would this assumption even be
necessary to this model? Afterall, like you say, there really is no
such thing as an infinite population.
