That isn't necessarily possible. When I first got cable, the installer
told me to use a couple of Road Runner DNS IPs instead of the ones my
ISP specified. They worked about a year, then quit. Pinging them won't
necessarily tell you anything, as many block pings to ease traffic. I've
accumulated a number of DNS IPs from various places over the years. Some
ping, some don't. Some work, some don't. You really want one that is
both responsive and physically close to your location, which is why you
really don't want the numbers from tampabay.rr.com that I have.
142.77.1.5 is one I was given that I never tried. It will ping. Try it
and see if your old RR or Earthlink numbers won't work.
