The 49ers traded David G. Riess to the Jets for saying:
DGR> Except they're not. Peter Kormos has deep pockets, but he's
DGR> losing money faster now, than when he was in Hartford.
I seriously doubt that. He's paying far less for rent in Fayetteville than he
was in Hartford. The team is charging more than tickets than they were in
Hartford so while they aren't drawing as much as they did in Hartford,
they're losing less than if they were using cut-rate pricing (Plus, they're
NOT Fayetteville's team so like the Oilers, they're facing local resistence
to subsidizing the team for two years). Yes, Hartford drew 15,000 fans last
year, however, that was to try and keep the team. The 11,000+ that they were
drawing before that was more of an indicator as to how the team had worn out
its welcome.
DGR> Not badly? Atlanta players in '76 had to take a pay cut in order
DGR> to keep the franchise from folding!
Maybe you should take your head of the sand and look at the truth. Atlanta
left an arena that was seating 15,000+ for one that was only seating 7,400.
They played there for 4 years, drawing LESS than they did in Atlanta. Why?
Because there was a promise to build an arena far beyond what was in Atlanta.
I think it's funny how you call the Carolina owner a fool when he's only
having to do this for 2 years and the Flames did it for 4. The Omni was an ok
arena for the Hawks until recently but now they're moving out to a better
arena with luxury boxes. Had the city built that arena many years ago, they'd
still have the Flames.
DGR> Buffalo Sabres is the next team most likely to move. They had to
DGR> bring in new ownership just to make payroll and have allowed
DGR> themselves to be completely shut out of the southern Ontario market.
Put away your crystal ball, Karnak because Buffalo isn't going anywhere.
Buffalo might have problems, however, it's THEIR problems and with the
opening of a new arena and a long-term lease, the only way they don't play in
Buffalo is that they fold.
DGR> Which won't mean squat if the fans in Denver go back to the old
DGR> ways and don't turn out to support a losing team. They would have been
DGR> better to have left the team in Quebec in the aging Colisee where they
DGR> would at least have had sellouts.
Puhleeze. The team wasn't selling doughnuts when they left (8 sellouts in
their last year and not much better before that). They've sold out every game
in their history in Colordo and will sellout far more in the next couple of
years than they did during their days in Quebec. As much as you might wish
it, Colorado is NOT going to crumble. If the Canadian cities that have teams
don't want to continue to lose them to the U.S., they need to pony up to the
bar. I think you might stop to think about the fact that U.S. teams aren't
moving into Canada and when the next team moves, it will be to a city in the
States.
