The US white collar labor economy has undergone important transformations
in the past twenty years that many people have not yet recognized. In the
new model, leaner meaner company, people are individually responsible for
their financial security and advancement. And this leaner meaner company
culture is spreader further and wider. What do people need to do to
thrive in this culture? Constant learning and growth. Recent trends
in management carry buzz words like "the learning organization." The
sought after new employees are exactly those that have mastered the
"learning to think" that liberal arts education used to specialize in.
The economy values this kind of education highly, but in today's
world "values" means they find new jobs faster and find better
new jobs; it doesn't mean they have job security.
