I haven't investigated much, yet, but it seems that I had an unwanted guest
on my system (vsmon.exe trojan) which AVG spotted and didn't allow it to
run, and then Windows decided that AVG's hook to the system was somehow
invalid and shut down. Strange. Anyway, I'll post an update if I ever
figure it out.

(And BTW, the vsmon.exe tries to look like Zone Alarm's True Vector
Internet Monitor, but it was pretty easy to spot as a fake because I don't
have ZA anywhere neare this system )
