problem with jamnntpd is that it does not support multibyte, so only can change singlebyte in diffrent charsets
better is to setup thunderbird to NOT send utf-8 at all, so keep what is supported in fidonet, but back from fidonet to thunderbird utf-8 works, have you tryed it ? :=)
