Well, Germany led the world in Diesel technology for many years (maybe still
does). After all, old Rudolf Diesel *was* a German.
Many of the traditional objections and shortcomings of Diesel engines are
being overcome with newer technology, while the inherent advantages remain.
Today's Diesel engines are easy starting, don't smoke, and have relatively
low power to weight ratios. (most say "high" ratio, but that's mathematically
incorrect, IMO) The Diesel still has the high reliability and economy that it
was always noted for.
