Well, I always thought because it was musically embarrassing on both 
McCartney's and Wonder's parts.  Randomly pick some black and white keys on 
a piano and play them, and you'll get cacophony, not harmony.  Ebony and 
Ivory don't live together "in perfect harmony"on a keyboard;
something from 
the outside has to choose specific ebony keys and ivory keys...often ones 
more like the others than not...in order to find ones that make good harmony 
together.  Which is really sort of the opposite of what it sounded like they 
wanted to say

And as for me, I'm a rocker, so even if it did say something that didn't 
make me want to say, "McCartney?  Wonder?  Never heard of them,"
it would be 
a yawn-y piece for me.
