The Rock Island Line was into quite a bit of rail-related business
before it hit on hard times. This railroad got into the game long after
the prime routes had been gobbled up by the likes of U.P., C&NW, CB&Q,
and a few others across the midwest, leaving them with traffic levels
that dried up to the point of pushing them out of the business.
While in it, however, they had some interesting schedules. One of their
passenger trains would run from Chicago to Limon, Colorado, where the
train would be switched into two trains, one going to Denver, the other
toward Colorado Springs. What made this one interesting from a railfan
point of view was that the booster unit, normally termed a "B" unit, had
its own flat-faced "cab" built in specifically for this service. On the
return run back to Chicago, the train would again be re-assembled at
Limon with the usual configuration of A and B units in the lead, with
whatever other conveyances attached behind.
