No, that is not correct.  You have two choices.  First, you can copy the
executable to a different file and modify that, or you can use a separate
program to modify the executable.  LIST for OS/2 does the former, Pro-YAM
does the latter.

The two cases aren't really equivalent.  LIST saves configuration
information to the executable (a bad idea no matter what the operating
system) while Pro-YAM saves the registration code in the executable so that
you can get updates through the Omen, Inc BBS.
