Hello Roy -

CA>> I also have dialup access at 56k which is _also_ faster
CA>> than some users have and can test with that as well.

RJT> Yes. My former provider never got me connected any faster
RJT> than 31200. Now I connect at 52000, just about each and
RJT> every time. (Note that this is with the same modem and
RJT> software, one of the reasons for the switch.)

Too bad ISP's aren't obligated to publish verifiable connect
rates so that users could know what they are getting. :-\

CA>> All dialup users get different _actual_ connect rates from
CA>> below 40k to as high as 50k which means even on dialup
CA>> I'm not seeing what _everyone_ sees in terms of delays. I
CA>> also have a 33.6k setup here for my W31 machine and can
CA>> test with that using Netscape v4.08 which I consider close
CA>> to the "bottom line" for business webpage designs.

CA>> My own personal webpages for tech and entertainment are
CA>> more 'anybrowser friendly'.

RJT> Some pages I access are marked that way.

CA>> I have compressed the HTML files and optimized all of the
CA>> graphics to keep load times for pages as fast as possible.

RJT> Some web page makers do this, others don't care.

You may have noticed that even though people claim to _want_
this level of access to websites they don't exactly "sing the
praises" of those who take the time to accomplish this? ;-)

CA>> I do test them with LINKS and an older IEx v3.0f that is
CA>> also on my 33.6k machine. Using LINKS I would guess even
CA>> an old 14.4k modem on dialup would be useable when viewing
CA>> my personal webpages.

CA>> Server stats show that the majority of users are using
CA>> Windows XP and IEx v6 even though my tech website is a
CA>> 'legacy' website for W31 and DOS users (with a few Linux
CA>> pages added recently). My guess is that users are
CA>> accessing the website from their workplace then taking the
CA>> information/files home to use on their personal computers?

RJT> Could be, I don't know what most people are using at work
RJT> these days. Last place I was at used NT.

Educated guess that with tax write-offs business can chase the
bleeding edge with less stress than the average user would
have. :-)

CA>> Newer versions of DreamWeaver MX have built in
CA>> 'validation' icons for testing webpages for accesibility
CA>> for impaired persons etc. which tells me that the business
CA>> of webpage design is growing up and begining to be more
CA>> user oriented than it has been

RJT> Good! :-)

CA>> but there is room for improvement as you and Wayne have
CA>> pointed out here. :-)

--8<--cut

RJT> Hmm. Interesting point there. I've got some software
RJT> upgrading to do, here, hopefully some of that will help
RJT> this situation.

It helps but nothing to "wow" about - maybe a 10-15%
improvement?
