I'm going to hazard a guess that you saw 850 Kilobytes/second, which is in
line with the early ATA ("IDE") drives that I tested.  Even
today's "Ultra DMA" ATA types won't yield anything like 850
Megabytes per second.

I always look for the sustained data transfer rate, rather than the average.
