Out here in California, mid-eighties vintage Cat-25's are selling in
the $14,000 to $18,000 range, assuming decent condition. A lot depends
on how well equipped the boat is, what kind of auxilliary power (a
boat with inboard diesel is worth more than one with a gas outboard),
whether a trailer is part of the deal, etc. For $16,000 I would expect
to get a swing-keel Cat-25 in good shape, with main, 110 and 150 headsails,
a good quality 8 hp outboard, a tandem-axle trailer with extendable
tongue and good tires.
Look for the following extras: Roller furling with all headsails adapted
to the furler, a Honda or Yamaha 4-cycle outboard (8 to 10 HP), depth
sounder, knotmeter, and VHF. If the boat is kept in a slip in the water,
be sure to have a surveyor look it over-you don't want to be stuck with
a $5000 blister repair job after you buy the boat. Best to find a boat
that has been trailer-sailed or kept in dry storage; no worries about
blistering. If it has an inboard diesel, make sure it is in good
condition-they cost a fortune to rebuild if you get a bad one. An
8 hp inboard diesel could end up costing 2 or 3 times as much as a new
gas outboard if you have to replace it.
I am looking to upgrade to a bigger boat this year, from my Catalina 22.
A Cat-25 is on my list of possibilities, so I would be interested
in hearing from you if you buy one.
