Would anyone out there in Star Wars Collectors Land happen to know what a box
of the 1979 Star Wars Dixie Cups is worth? There are over 40 Star Wars
designs on the cups, and the box is almost full.
I was told by several people that this type of collectable is worth a fair
amount simply because, unlike cards, action figures, posters, comics, or
other items that people buy to keep or resell, these cups were just used and
thrown away by most people, putting them in the same class of collectability
as most 50's and 60's collectables, from Lunch Pails to toys, that people
back in those days just used and threw away when they weren't any good
anymore. (This is what separates TRUE collectables from the "created market"
collectables today, I am told. True collectables are specimens of things
people never bothered to save - like 50's and 60's board games or lunch
pails. When they broke or were no good anymore, they were thrown out and new
ones bought. With today's collectables, companies literally "create" a
limited market by limiting the numbers of items of a particular line they are
putting out. These are actually "faux-collectables" though, because they have
not stood the test of time and desireability of the stuff from the 60's and
before, when people weren't saving things all the time.)
Anyhow, if anyone has a book on Star Wars collectables they can reference for
this item, I'd sure appreciate it. I was told this box is worth about $50.00
or so, but I just want to confirm that with someone who may KNOW, as opposed
to a person who just supposed it's value. It's also possible that due to
this type of item's scarcity, it's worth a lot more than I was told.
Any info appreciated!
