Close to what I remember about the Penns...

Quite similar to what I used to do with my Dad's Penn reels. I never did
figure how he managed to bend the spools, but... Many years later I
noticed the 'spool'on my boat trailer winch is _badly_ mangled. There _is_
a lot of side force when the line is spooled under tension, and I had a
habit of never releasing the tension, or re-winding the winch when we got
back home. Could be that my Dad did the same with his Penns...

The old ones my Dad had _did_ have adjustments for the bearing position,
and he was constantly using THOSE for increasing the drag, rather than the
'star', and wearing the frame with the ends of the spool. He was NOT
mechanically inclined. :-((

"A", and "C" are the two cases I've had experience
with. "C" was not too bad if my Dad didn't actually break
something. "A" was handled just as Jean did, I used an oak block
with a hole in it, and a wooden thread spool over the shaft at the other
end. Tap a little and check, tap a little more, check again, etc. For the
life of me, I can't remember how the gear was attached to the spool, nor
whether it got in my way.
Good luck... M.
