DEP is used for two related items, one software and one hardware. =
Both are supported for 32-bit and 64-bit. There is no waiting. You = will
need a processor that support NX for hardware support. The = software DEP
is a subset of what the hardware DEP would enforce.
Anyway, there are plenty of applications that try to execute memory =
that they did not allocate as executable. This is why the default for =
Windows XP SP2 is to enable DEP for system services only on x86. The =
.NET Framework, assuming you have the latest service packs, is OK. = There
are app compat work arounds for some of the common failures. = Whether it
is an issue depends on what software you run. I have my = systems
configured with all except named apps and have no exceptions and = I have
not seen any failures.

Anyone else seen problems with the somewhat inchoate Data Execution
Protection, a trainer-wheels software form of what's coming for us all =
in the
64-bit world? I haven't seen it myself yet, but a friend got bit bad =
with a
stalled install of some VBNET package or other. He had to back off to
yesterday, turn off the DEP service for "all except named apps," then
reinstall. He's not sure all NET components are kosher yet - more =
later.
He pointed me to this Q:

I'm hearing generally positive things from small users, but there may =
be
problems with PCAnywhere 10. Symantec says all is ducky, of course. =
Very
preliminary indications seem to say things go smoother on a machine =
patched to
latest under SP1 than with somethng off the shelf that needs lots of =
updates.
And the CD local install seems lots better than depending on the net =
for a
patch this big.
