subject: Re: XP Sp2 - need help

From: "Rich Gauszka"

I did find a knowledge base article on replacing files in the dllcache.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555047&Product=winxp

It states that WPF cache is not protected and so it appears that I can
easily re-create it after running a chkdsk ( I had her run virus scans
already ) . I guess I should check the registry settings for cache size etc
at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;222193&Product=winxp

she's running XP Home so I don't think I can use gpedit.msc

The LastGood directory is used to save a known good configuration after a
config change in order to support the boot option to boot to the last known
good config. It would not be an appropriate new location for the DLL
cache.

I'll have her do that. She has a Windows\LastGood\System32\dllcache
folder.
I tried searching the knowledgebase and saw that one could change the
location of the dllcache folder so I was assuming that could be the cause.
I've tried searches on XP and LastGood but just found instances where
people
mentioned the directory. I'll have to wait for her to bring her PC so I
can
check the registry settings for the location of the dllcache

There is a windows\system32\dllcache directory unless some disk
corruption deleted it. My suggestion is to run CHKDSK /F /R, reboot, and
  then try again.

I have a friend who attempted to upgrade to SP2 ( she has successfully
upgraded sp1 and all subsequent critical patches ).

While sp2 was in the process of backing up her files she received the
  error
    message

Cannot copy Windows\System32\dllcache\mshtmled.dll and she can't proceed
from there ( RETRY or Cancel).

I had her check her folders and she doesn't have a
  Windows\System32\dllcache
    folder.

She does have a Windows\LastGood\System32\dllcache folder but the
mshtmled.dll file is not in that folder either.

I doubt this is as easy to fix as copying some files to the dllcache
  folder
as the dllcache folder seems to involve the Windows File Protection
  Feature.

Besides Cancel and Retry to the error message she did have an option to
point to the WIndows CD or directory where the System32 files are
stored.
Can I just copy the I386 files from a XP CD? She doesn't have the
ability
to do this as she only has a Recover ( blast everything away CD)

    Any help is appreciated.
