yeah, water is much rougher on a diesel engine, that why they fit those
separators.  I think I've seen them on diesel trucks too.

the easiest way may just be to have the fuel pipe inlet an inch or
so above the botttom of the tank and the petcock at the bottom,

To check for water just drain a sample into a glass jar until fuel
starts flowing, if too much fuel flows you can tip it from the top of the
jar back into the into the tank.
