Hi Ed, Whoa! You got it all wrong - nobody cut/modified any cables/plugs - these are *standard* Sony *official* parts with specific parts numbers - the ones that have a rubber end plug in a figure-8-profile that pushes into the input end of the rectangular power unit that via a fixed cable on the other end plugs into the Laptop/Camcorder etc. I.e. I have both cable sets for VAIO and Camcorder - AUST+US. They may not be relevant for us down here in Australia (not meeting statutory electrical safety and voltage requirements etc.). >>> >>Hi Ed, >> >>I bought my VAIO Laptop in LA in March 1999, had it delivered 3 months >>later in Seattle, and that was a US model only - all the Battery powered >>computers are auto-sensing 50-60Hz/100-260V or so - I use the same power >>supply here as in the US, just with the two flat-prong US cable there >>and the angled larger plug one here. the UL electrical standards are >>just as high there. >> > >The problem with this approach is that should an electrical fault occur (on any of the equipment in the room where your computer is) and that causes a fire, there's a good chance the insurance wont pay out if they find that you are using non-Australia certified electical equipment. I agree, usually the standards now a days are high enough, however in principal that mains cable that you cut the us plug off and added the Australian plug could be rated at 120V and you've connected it to 240V, ie outside of the specification for the installation - or so an insurance inspector could see it. > >Crazy but true ! > >The main problems I suspect would be with the drivers for the hardware - do we have more details about the laptop than what is in the article ? > >Cheers/2 > I haven't investigated it myself - I've been too busy, lately :-) . As I hadn't seem mention of it in any of the OS/2-eCs groups, and I received it as part of one of the nesw-bulletins I have delivered, I just passed the information on as is. when I have time, I usually read "commentary-type articles" before quoting them, but not always hardware-related. -- Regards, Mike Failed the exam for -------------------- MCSE - Minesweeper Consultant and Solitaire Expert -------------------- [ISP blocks *.exe attachments] [Please use zipped versions of above] Yahoo!
