subject: G.I. VCII(+) Module ID Problem

Hello All!
My G.I. VCII(+) module reports an ID # of "0000-0000-00##"
(the ## being the only numbers other than zero).
GI says that this module is 'fried' and not repairable.
They suggest that I buy a new one for ~$400 or try and find
a used one for ~$150. Neither of these solutions are acceptable,
and neither is the suggestion to buy one of the cheap DSS systems.
Has anyone had this same problem with their module, and is there
a way to repair this myself (maybe by replacing the ROM, etc) ?
The module also has a place for a "TvPass Card". Where can I
obtain one of these. The tech at GI says that technology hasn't
been implemented yet, but I find this hard to believe, since the
module is at least 3 or more years old.
Sincerely,
           Bruce - kb6lwn - ck1@pacbell.net
