Maybe you call it something else. Phonics, to me, is sounding out
words....decoding is another word for it. For instance, a child with phonics
skills would look at the word CAT and think (or even say)
kuh-aaaaaaa-t. Cat.
The word "Phonics" would be sounded out by a former 2nd grader as:
ffff-ah-nnnnnn-ih-k-ssssss. (The child has been taught that "p-h" says "f"
like in "phone".)
