I don't think an east window would give you nearly enough light.
It's "good" light until more or less noon, but there is probably not
enough total hours of light, especially in the winter. I have a
moisture meter (I sort of inherited it), but somehow I never bothered
actually using it. With smaller pots - just the weight of the pot
and plant will tell you when things start getting dry. But my bet is
you problem is the light. African violets don't like direct sunlight,
but they like it bright, and they especially like it for at least ten
hours a day, preferably twelve. They also don't like being to close
to a cold window in the winter. Grin. But who does?
