-> Haven't seen much about the NAD amps and products except that they
-> have a very plain, understated look. Have you taken one apart? Hows the
-> build quality? Are piece parts of highest quality? Transformers? Wiring?
-> etc? The Rotels seem to give a very good accounting of themselves. Are the
-> NADs
-> of the same philosphy...designed in US or Europe.....built in SE Asia to
-> exacting standards?
NAD's are a strange anomality.
I have a strong love/hate for them.
They are one of those groups of equipment that the "sum" far exceeds the
"pieces" used. The build quality is overall, average. The parts mix is for
he
most part, piss poor. As an example; most of the stuff of the recent past
ses
offshore 2N3055/2N2955 outputs (available for all of about .50 @) - mid '70's
sluggish T0-3 cans with the speed of a wet fart. Stock mid-'80's Jap. semi's
mixed with Euro BC/BD devices. Standard Sanyo FM IC's etc.
On the good side - pretty much discrete designs, decent multistage power
supplies.
On average, they sound GOOD and are pretty reliable, but much like some
other vintage designs like the Advent 300 reciever, SHOULDN'T!
The other factor that sways me away from NAD are their "roots"; they were a
company formed originally by a group of retailers looking to create an
"in-house" product (National Association of Dealers - NOT New Audio
Dimensions), so they would farm out designs, manufacturing etc....Not an
approach I personally approve of.
But they have a following that is stoic.
