Yes vmm32 grabs whatever it can, although I believe it can be setup
herwise.

Yes, but how is it done?? I have a shortcut to 4dos.com on my desktop. In
the properties > memory there's a setting "Uses HMA" which can be checked or
unchecked. This is the only thing I can find which seems to tell win95 that
the app uses this type of memory. I assumed this was what allowed it to
access UMBs. But it mustn't be, as I've checked the box but it makes no
difference,
4dos still gives the startup error that UMB's aren't available.
I've used the [secondary] directive (as mentioned by Bill Drake) in 4dos.ini
to get around this problem. But as you say, I thought win95 could be setup
to allow the use of UMB's to certain apps, etc.
