38 years ago I drove an MGB with leather interior and real wire
wheels. When any other 'sports car' owner would pass by we
would wave to each other. Corvette owners would try to wave at
us but we pretended to not see them and did not wave back. We
didn't consider the Corvette to be in the same league as a
'real' sports car. 

It was childish and a bit arrogant since our vehicles only
vaguely resembled the versions that were actually entered into
a race. The exclusivity was imaginary at best.
