subject: Advice on LAN setup required

I have a friend with a small business that employs 5 people. Each person
has their own desktop PC, but they have a need to share files and a printer.

What alternatives exist for connecting these PCs so that files can be shared
without going to the trouble and expense of installing a single specific
file server?
For example, can the machines and printer simply be linked by Ethernet
connections?

Any advice and even suggested costings or contacts would be gratefully
received.

Tschá

James.
