Seeing you have a good programming backround, I'd recommend you start
doing text mode programming in C/C++ for OS/2. That way, you don't have
to come up to speed with C/C++ _AND_ OS/2 at the same time. 

Once you feel comfortable with C/C++ [probably not too long given you
backround], start on the PM programming. At this point, I would
recommend one of the following books:

1. OS/2 Programming, Schlidt & Goosey [short introduction]
2. OS/2 PM programming, Petzold (1994) [longer, in depth introduction]
