One more piece of information about the possible bottleneck.
Just now I was copying several gig of files (at the slow 7.75mb speed I
keep getting) I was downloading from torrent at 200K and just for fun I
burned a new Knoppix 5.x DVD and everything seems to be working just fine
as in no apparent bottlenecks except for the slow network copy.
This really should not be possible.
