Hi,
Sounds like you fetched the settings in the memory of the modem,
using AT&V.
To answer your question is relatively simple but lenghty in text.
The logical thing to suggest is to obtain from your local munici-
pal library the book titled Modems for Dummies, by Sybex.
I had the same problem when I started, even worse when I changed
to a fax/modem. Reading this book and copying some notes solved
all these problems... and they are many.

On the other hand, if this book or other cannot be located in
your municipality, let me know, I'll write it down for you,
meantime, just use as a init string AT&F : command to restore
the factory settings embedded in the modem memory.
