Powell replies
Powell last week denied that he had ever been guilty of stealing other
people's work. "There is a simple explanation for the incidents shown on
MediaWatch," he said. He explained that many stories used in his Herald
computer section are based on press releases and stories by other wire
services, and it was inevitable that similar or identical paragraphs would
appear.
As for the Q and A column, it was accidentally placed in ther Herald by
another journalist while he was overseas. It had been prepared as a mock-up
to show how a Q and A section could be used on a radio show he was preparing.
While he was out of the country, an ad was suddenly cancelled, and a fill
article was needed in a hurry, Powell said. It was on his personal computer,
slugged with his byline, so the journalist who used it thought he had
written it.
"I have obviously been defamed," Powell told Newsbytes, "but
I won't be
suing the show because it is Herald policy not to instigate these types of
proceedings and it would cost me at least $100,000 to start things myself."

Editor's note In the interests of self-preservation, some of Littlemore's
more extraordinary and (we believe) defamatory remarks have been culled
from this report which originated int he US-based Nesbytes. We have known
Powell for many years, as an exceptionally prolific, gifted and colourful
writer who does more than any one else to explain complex IT issues in
layman's lanaugage and an entertaining manner. The complaint over the years
has never been that he pinches his copy, rather that he presentes it in a
highly idiosyncratic style and he has a don't-give-damn personality which
some find amusing, others abraisive. No law against that. We'd urge him to
have another chat to his lawyers. --- David Frith.
Footnote from other sources inside Fairfax: Sue Lowe, the reporter accused
by making the "mistake" by Powell went to her editor and denied his claim.
Powell was then sacked. Who do YOU believe?
..........
IMO, it's about time someone comprehensively exposed Gareth for the
ignorant and pathetic fraud he really is. His credibility as a reputable IT
journalist was already below zero. This latest fiasco will ensure his
credibiity hits absolute zero for all time.
