 Have you seen freedos?   It's still in early development stages, (they call
it beta, but it's *really* buggy).   From the looks of things, it needs a fair
bit of work, they detail which calls are not supported though, and the overall
-user interface- is a little on the rough side.  A good idea in any case.

 It's basically an msdos compatible operating system with full source code.
