CRC handbook of physics and chemistry says 3.785412. I'd trust it. The
dictionary is wrong.

A gallon is *defined* as 231 cubic inches. An inch is *defined* as 2.54
cm (really!)

231 * 2.54^3 = 3785.411784 cm^3 = 3.785411784 liters.
