There are indeed 3 wild card teams from each conferance as well as the 3
division winners.
The playoff teams are seeded as follows :
1. Division winner with best record.
2. Division winner with 2nd best record.
3. Division winner with 3rd best record.
4. Wild Card with best record.
5. Wild Card with 2nd best record.
6. Wild Card with 3rd best record.
It does not matter if a Wildcard team has a better record than a division
winner (As will be the case in the AFC this season), they are still seeded
below the division winner.
Note that the NFL's tiebreak system is used to break ties between Division
Champions or Wildcards with identical win/loss records.
Throughout the playoffs the higher seeded team plays at home except for the
Superbowl which is played at a predetermined venue.
There are no second chances for any team.
In the first round (Wildcard Playoffs) the top two seeds have byes.
The 3rd seed plays the 6th seed and the 4th seed plays the 5th seed.
In the second round (Divisional Playoffs) the top seed plays the lowest
remaining seed whilst the second seed plays the other remaining seed.
In the third round (Conferance Championships) the winners of the Divisional
Playoffs play each other for the Conferance Championship.
In the Superbowl the two Conferance Champions play each other.
Going back a number of years ago there were only two Wildcard teams with them
playing each other in the 1st round and all Division Champions having a bye
n
the first round.
