Yep, they are a similar concept but not identical. The most obvious
difference is that there aint a simple integer ratio between the symbol
rate and the bps rate. There is with the baud/bps with say a V22bis modem.

You will find that with say V.34, there aint a single mention of
the word baud in the entire recommendation. Thats done for a reason.

That business about there being no integral ratio between the symbol
rate and the bps rate is crucial and it comes about because of the
scrambler superimposed on the trellis constellation pattern, so you dont
actually have that simple concept of state changes per second any more.
